~DEADLY MELODIES: A BUTCHERBIRD COLLECTION~

Australia

Butcherbirds, common residents in suburban Brisbane, are superb songsmiths & fearsome predators.

Australasian natives, butcherbirds belong to the same genus as the Australian magpie; like magpies, they are accomplished & enthusiastic singers, smart & aggressively territorial. Brisbane is home to two species, both featured here: the pied butcherbird (Cracticus nigrogularis), with its distinctive black “bib” and iconic array of melodies; and the grey butcherbird (Cracticus torquatus). Both types, despite their sweet appearance, are ruthless hunters of insects, reptiles & even smaller birds.
