Coke Machine with a View, Kochi, 2015

Roadside drink (& other products) machines photographed on my foot-powered journeys in the Land of Convenience.

Although I’m philosophically opposed, I guess, to the idea of these garish, energy-sucking beasts (I read once during my first stay in Japan that one machine used as much energy as a house) & their oft-dubious contents, like most long-distance walkers in Japan I conduct frequent - sometimes several times a day - transactions with them for energising refreshment & crucial caffeine (albeit usually hyper-sweetened) to get the brain buzzing on pre-dawn journeys. With these shots, I tend to look for incongruous settings & compositions that highlight both their ubiquity & that very Japanese idealisation of convenience.
