~MORETON ISLAND: MOUNTAINS MADE OF SAND~

Australia

Scenes from my walks around the perimeter of the world’s 3rd-largest sand island, not far off the South-East Queensland coast.

One of my favourite places in the world, Moreton is a short ferry ride from Brisbane across the Bay, but often feels like pure wilderness. Being largely sand, the isle is in a state of constant change - every time I visit the topography is different. What I love most about circling Moreton on foot (five times so far) is the incredible variety of environments & landscapes: sheltered mangrovey beaches crawling with soldier crabs, giant sandhills, banksia forests, WWII ruins, wild surf beaches, dunes, tidal pools, lagoons, freshwater lakes
