~SHIKOKU: HELPING HANDS ON THE HENRO PATH~

Japan

A gallery of path markers & signposts, old & modern, on the Shikoku Pilgrimage.

The Shikoku Henro (the 88-Temple Pilgrimage) is reputedly many centuries old & one of the pleasures of walking it is the reminders of its history & those who’ve walked its paths before you. While large portions of the route are nowadays undertaken on roads, numerous sections of surviving mountain or forest trail remain. The “pointing hand” motif is common on old stone markers on both road & path.
