Scenes from my 2017 journey along the entire 196km Shimanto River, Kochi - the only un-dammed major waterway remaining in Japan.

The beautiful Shimanto River had an almost mystical allure for me even before my first trek along its length, an impromptu adventure during an utterly unplanned ramble through Shikoku in 2008. In 2017 I detoured inland after temple #36 while doing my 2nd 88-Temple Pilgrimage, reached the source at last, then repeated my Shimanto walk over a week, this time via temple #37, before reaching the mouth & resuming my pilgrimage. These pictures are presented chronologically.
