Marvellous black-winged stilts photographed at low tide on the Sandgate flats.

This collection showcases the black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus), a member of the avocet family, photographed over several weeks at low tide on the Sandgate waterfront, mostly just before sunrise. I don’t use big, heavy birding lenses & have to “zoom with my feet” ; as with my BEAKS & WINGS IN BLACK & WHITE gallery, I enjoy portraying these lovely birds within carefully composed scenes, but here, colour is key. I often go for a highly saturated, almost psychedelic effect in homage to the transcendent flood of light & colour that accompanies a typical Moreton Bay sunrise.
